Music

The Brentwood Secondary College Music Program is an exciting and energetic area of the college that provides students with a range of learning opportunities in many different areas of music. We offer a comprehensive Classroom Music Program as well as a growing Instrumental Music Program. These two programs work in synergy to develop well-rounded young musicians.

Classroom Music
Brentwood Secondary College boasts a comprehensive Classroom Music program that aims to develop students’ skills, abilities and understanding of music through a range of hands on learning tasks. Right from yr 7, students get the opportunity to explore a range of different areas of music including performance, composition, music theory and musicianship; laying the foundations to further their musical education in senior years.

Brentwood is developing a reputation for musical excellence but most importantly, we want students to enjoy learning music and aim to instill a passion that will stay with them forever. Our dedicated team of classroom teachers represent and promote these values in their students and work tirelessly to provide them with numerous opportunities to perform, advance, achieve and excel.

Instrumental Music Program
Our highly experienced Instrumental Music teaching staff work with students to foster their understanding and love for music through the learning of an Instrument or Voice. The Instrumental Music program builds on the skills and concepts taught in the Classroom Music Program that runs from yr 7 through to yr 12 where students have the opportunity to complete VCE Music Performance.

Students attend weekly lessons either as part of a small group or individually. Lessons occur during class time on a rotating timetable to ensure that students do not miss the same class more than once in a 5-week cycle.

Performance skills are a key part of the learning of Instrumental Music students at Brentwood, and students have many opportunities throughout the year to develop these skills through their participation in one of our many school Ensembles. Students can be a part of the Concert Bands (Junior, Intermediate or Senior), String Orchestras, Guitar Ensembles, Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Bands (Junior and Senior) and many more. These ensembles are also open to students who learn an Instrument outside of the Brentwood Instrumental Music Program.

Students also have the opportunity to undertake a range of external music examinations including AMEB, AMRSM, Trinity and ANZCA. Our Instrumental Music Teachers are able to guide students through these exams that give students a great sense of accomplishment.

Showcasing our students’ musical achievements is an important part of the Brentwood Secondary College Music program. Students have many opportunities throughout the year to perform at a number of Music Events including the annual Gala Concert, Spring Soiree, VCE Music Showcase evenings and Instrumental Soiree’s.
